Dreamers and the Future of the U.S. Immigration System

Dreamers brought to the United States as children without documentation have been at the center of a heated political debate for years. Despite many of them know no other home than the United States, their status has been uncertain, and their future in this country has been a source of anxiety and fear.

However, the recent election of President Joe Biden, who has promised to take a more compassionate approach to immigration, has given Dreamers hope that the future of the US immigration system may be brighter for them.

One of the most significant actions that President Biden can take to help Dreamers is to reinstate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA was an Obama-era program that provided temporary relief from deportation and work authorization to eligible Dreamers. However, in 2017, the Trump administration announced that it would end the program. Since then, Dreamers have been living in fear of deportation and cannot work or attend school without fear of being discovered.

Reinstating DACA would be a significant step in the right direction for Dreamers, but it is only a temporary solution. The ultimate goal must be a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers. It would allow them to fully integrate into American society and contribute to their communities without fear of deportation.

Another critical issue that the Biden administration must address is the family separation caused by the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy. Thousands of families have been torn apart, and many are still struggling to be reunited. The Biden administration must work to reunite these families and provide them with a path to citizenship.

The US immigration system needs reform, and Dreamers should be at the center of this conversation. They are an integral part of American society and deserve the opportunity to participate fully. The Biden administration has the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of Dreamers, and we must all work together to ensure they do.

In conclusion, dreamers’ fate is closely tied to the future of the US immigration system. Reinstating the DACA program and creating a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers are essential steps toward a more just and equitable system. The Biden administration has the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of Dreamers, and it’s time for our country to give them the respect and dignity they deserve.
